1. During Upanayanam, the child is initiated into Gayatri Mantra and it is said that chanting the Gayatri Mantra is good.
If Mahamantra is really powerful and can do good to anyone who chants it, why not give Mahamantra as the Upadesa?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
There are two distinct Dharmas prescribed– the Vaideeka Dharma and the Bhagavata Dharma.
In Ramayana, we see that Rama protected the ‘Yagna’ (austerities) of the rishis This is Vaideeka Dharma. We also see that Rama blessed Ahalya. This is Bhagavata Dharma.
The most sacred sound in Vaideeka Dharma is ‘Om’. ‘Rama’ is the equivalent in Bhagavata Dharma. While Vaideeka Dharma talks about rituals and rites, Bhagavata Dharma talks about love for God. The former is for a few to follow, while the latter is meant for everyone.
Gayatri Mantra is a very powerful Mantra in the Vaideeka Dharma. Mahamantra is a very powerful Mantra in the Bhagavata Dharma.
Thus one cannot substitute the other. They cannot be mixed.

2. Is chanting Gayathri Mantra enough, instead of chanting Mahamantra? When I go to satsang, I chant the Mahamantra. But, personally when I am in my room, I chant Gayathri Mantra.
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
There are rules and regulations to chant the Gayathri Mantra. They require appropriate 'Nyasa's . It mandates purity and cleanliness in all respects. You can chant the Gayathri Mantra only while sitting or standing. You cannot chant it while moving about. Unlike Gayathri Mantra, Mahamantra can be chanted at any time and any place with absolutely no restrictions at all.
Hence, whenever you are pure and clean, and find the appropriate time and place, chant the Gayathri Mantra. At all other times, chant the Mahamantra.

3. I am very clear that the Mahamantra can be chanted at any time/ any place. But what are the restrictions to chant the Gayatri Mantra, Aditya Hrudayam, Vishnu Sahasranamam and Lalitha Sahasranamam (if any)?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Gayatri Mantra can be chanted only during Sandhyavandhana times. If you are a Gayatri Upasak, you have to chant it with proper ablutions ('madi'). You should follow proper Asana (sitting postures) and follow instructions / guidance from a Guru who is an Upasaka.
Aditya Hrudayam, Vishnu Sahasranamam and Lalitha Sahasranamam can be chanted like other Slokas with at least minimum purity. If you are chanting them for a specific purpose / with a specific prayer in mind, then it has to follow specific restrictions.

4. I am unable to carry out my regular religious ablutions at proper times, owing to my circumstances, as well as my laziness. Will it have any effect if I do not do it in proper time? Can Gayatri Mantra be recited without performance of Sandhya Vandanam?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
Whatever you do will certainly have their effects. Unless you are a Gayatri-upasak, you should not chant the Gayatri Mantra as and when you wish. You can chant it as many times as you wish with proper purity, and following the appropriate guidelines prescribed for it in our Scriptures.

5. I read that Sri Paramacharya (Kanchi Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati Swamiji) preached that ladies should not chant the Gayatri Mantra. Some female devotees are chanting the Mantras and performing yagnas. Is this correct?
Sri Sri Muralidhara Swamiji:
When Sri Paramacharya Himself has opined about this, what do we have to say? Can there be a greater authority?

Permalink Reply by amit on March 24, 2012 at 6:39pm . Gayathri Mantra was revealed to Sage Vishwamitra. When he became a Maha Rishi (Great Rishi) it was revealed when he was meditating. Hence why we seek his blessings and remember him when practising or repeating the Gayathri Mantra! Hope this helps

Gayatri Mantra is a highly revered mantra in Hinduism. It is one of the oldest available divine hymns. It is also known as Savitri Mantra.
Gayatri Mantra was originally revealed in meditation to Sage Vishwamitra. Later the Rishis selected the words of the Gayatri Mantra and arranged them, so that they not only convey meaning but also create specific power of righteous wisdom through their utterence.
Why he gave Gayatri Mantra?
Gayatri means that which protects the one who sings or chants it.Mantra means that which leads us to the highest Goal through reflection upon it...Any mantra for that matter, is given for the welfare of the mankind.

Gayatri Mantra is normally and principally associated with "Om Bhoor Bhava Swaha...." Mantra. But there are so many Mantras which are all called Gayatri.
In my learning and understanding, Gyatri Mantra is any Mantra which is sung as hymn with melody singing the praize of God. If the Mantra is given by a Siddh Purush (Sat Guru) to some one that will really have a tremendous and great effect.
One will see and feel the impact and effect of a Mantra (Chanting) if his mind gets purified and results in peace (Shanti).
May Good Bless !!

Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah
Tat Savitur Vareniyam !
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yonah Prachodayat !!
"Om" the first sacred sound is Beyond the TIME can not be decay, disappear or change but TIME is changeable. Gyan is the knowledge which is clear witness to our sense required to realize the Brahma the Mother Earth first and than the Param Brahma the Universe are Beyond the TIME. In the path of spirituality we are moving from TIME to Beyond the TIME where complete surrender is require otherwise our thoughts will interfere our concentration will create inconstancy of mind and will break the concentration. We have to unite with Self "I", Brahma and Param Brahma. Without surrendering how can it be possible.
Before reciting Vedas why we chant Gayatri Mantra? When Sage Vishwamitra have the inconstancy of mind Gayatri Mantra was revealed and he recited the Gayatri not for liberation but for surrendering himself on mercy of the desire God. Gayatri is not a Mantra but a powerful metrical composition. Veda is our knowledge also Brahma or Param Brahma is our knowledge or Science respectively so we pray 3 times the Gayatri metre.
O! Mother Earth and complete Universe, I am your devotee surrendering to you to know your reality.

Rishi Vishwamitra was not satified with his meditation after becoming Maharshi. Again he sit for meditation as he wated to become Brahmarshi and lastly Param Brahman has blessed him as a Brahmarshi. After beccoming Brahmarshi Vishwamitra he enlighten himself with Sampurna Veda Tattva which is the Param Brahma Tattva.
